Q & A with Robyn Defonce

*Where are you from originally?

Williamsville, NY, a suburb of Buffalo. Yes, that Buffalo, where they get all the snow. Ironic, because I love warm weather- heat and humidity don’t bother me at all. Cold temperatures and snow, on the other hand, I could do without!

*What’s your favorite Pilates exercise?

I have to go with a basic mat exercise- the Roll-Up. I love it because it is a great way to feel a stretch down the entire back line of the body while warming up and connecting with the core. When I am feeling cranky, tight or tired, a few good roll-ups can really help.

*Anything else you enjoy doing for exercise?

I really love to mix it up when it comes to my own fitness. I am a morning person and have a reformer and TRX as well as weights and other small equipment at home, so I usually workout early in the morning before the rest of the house is awake. I get bored with the same routine, though, so I am always doing something different. I might go running, biking, and do a weight workout one week and then do TRX, take a spin class or go on hike the next week. The one thing that is constant, though, is Pilates. I practice Pilates (either on my own or jumping in on one of our other inspiring instructors’ classes) several times a week. It is the one activity that I can’t go without, and it’s what allows my body to smoothly continue to do everything else.

*Why do you like teaching at Black Rock Pilates?

Laura has set the tone at Black Rock Pilates Studio to be such a warm, nurturing environment. The clients are special and everyone feels comfortable being there, no matter what their fitness level.

*What do you like about teaching Pilates?
I love having the opportunity each and every day to help people do something incredible for themselves- to become stronger, balanced and out of pain. It is amazing to see the transformation over time in some of my clients.

*What classes do you teach at BRP? When are you available for privates?

Currently, I teach three group classes at Black Rock Pilates:
Monday 9:30am Mat, Monday 10:45am TRX and Thursday 11:45am reformer. I am available

for private session on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

*An odd, little known fact about yourself (Pilates-related or not!) A “fun fact” if you will 🙂

Unlike many Pilates instructors, I was never a dancer. In fact, I don’t even know how to dance!
